Theory as Practise: Tezuka Osamu (Essay Artist Research)

Tezuka Osamu

Tezuka Osamu, many claim that he is known as the godfather of manga because he is the man behind the reason for the popularity of mangas in Japan. Without Tezuka manga had a risk of staying unpopular. Without his work manga would not be as well known as it is today. One of his popular work is called Astro boy. Astro Boy is known in Japan by Mighty Atom. It is Japanese manga series written and Illustrated by Osamu from 1952 to 1968. A fantasy science fiction series set in the future where typically robots had a part in the earth.

Astro Boy by Tezuka Osamu

The story is about a robot who looks like a normal boy, named Astro Boy. Doctor Tenma, who was the head of the Ministry of Science created Astro Boy has a powerful robot but with features that resemble his son who sadly he passed away in a car accident. Astro boy was treated like Tenma's real son even though he realised that the robot he created could not fill replace his real son, especially taking into account that Astro boy could not express his feelings or grow old with Tenma. Time passes and Astro boy was sold to a circus owner and that was there Professor Ochanomizu, the new head of Ministry of Science noticed the little robot and persuaded the circus owner to give Astro boy to him. Astro boy was treated gently and even had a legal guardian. Professor Ochanomizue realises that Astro boy has ability to do things that not many other robots could do and one of them being the ability to experience human emotions. Being brought up by a good person made Astro boy seeks justice for those who need help. He fought crime, evil and injustice.

He did other manga involving around nudity and sex. I think if you are not a manga artist or at all interested in manga then it would be unbelievable that a man who was famous for Astro boy could doing this type of work.

The Book of Human Insects (1970)
Apollo's Song (1970)
 Angel's Hill (1960)
Ayako (1972)
Yakeppachi's Maria (1970)

I am very interested in Yakeppachi's Maria (1970) because I just found out that this manga was supposely for sexual education but when I had happen to scan through images from the manga, I just understood that this as sex education for boys and I got a sense of ownership from the male towards the female.

The reason I decided to research Tezuka Osamu is because I wanted to add him as my Artist research in my Essay as I think he had a big impact relating to my essay question "What are the female roles in mangas and why are they portrayed in that way?". I believe that because Tezuka Osamu played a big role in manga as a whole, he would have many fans and followers that would be inspired by his work and continue on that same route. With his talent and imagination he could once again single handily capture other illustrator and manga authors.
