Personal projects : Prints & Pattern Obsession

I am becoming more and more obsessed with patterns and prints.

The elegance of pattern repeats in a predictable manner. You can have geometric pattern, a pattern made of geometric shapes that typically repeats itself. Nature is perfect example of pattern "Nature provides many kinds of pattern including symmetries, trees and other structures with fractal dimension, spiral, meanders, waves, foams, tilings, cracks and stripes"(wikipedia, Pattern). There spirals, chaos, flow, meanders, waves, dunes, bubbles, foam, cracks, sports, stripes and symmetry.

We usually see many of these on wallpapers.  Ever since I joined Pinterest I am always either roaming through images of african fashion style or Prints. I do not see this obsession being anyway bad but more of positive influential impact for my future as a designer. I always used to just stare and admire other peoples creation and wonder how is it possible to come up with such eccentric designs. I have yet to see these type of pattern or prints in what we would usually see on products when we are in stores and I think they a needing more of this instead of the regular style.

I would not say that we all like patterns however we are immersed in patterns from the moment we came to this world, so it is just naturally in our surrounding. It is in the clothes we choose to wear, our walls and more. The designs is extremely influenced by Golden Ratio by phi. A pattern where each part is 1.618 times from the previous "In mathematics, two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. The figure on the right illustrates the geometric relationship."(wikepedia, Golden Ratio). I think we are our concept of visual beauty in art and design came from Golden Ratio because we tend follow the regular pattern.

I am not sure why I or the world likes patterns. Is it because they are repeated? So we are comfortable with the fact that we know what comes next. Maybe i am unnecessarily thinking into depth. What I do know is that I see them everywhere and I am keen of them. I want to learn from my research and grow more as a designer. My plan is to begin with research and eventually create my own pattern work.
