After Effects: Motion Graphic

Motion Graphic
A Teacher Explaining Mathematics

Our task is to create a short ten second clips in After Effect for each workshop and they will all be different workshops exploring different areas and themes. Some of the themes are visual but also motion. A loop is a motion. Then at the end it will be 30 seconds showing each of my clips throughout the year. The tasks were given is working towards the placement level, so i will be more than ready for an industry by the end of the year.

I used Illustrator to design my quick character ‘Teacher’, with simple 7 layers that includes hair, head, white shirt, red tie, suit, hand and brown trousers. As you can see my character resembles a business man too and that is because he was inspired from a business man but as time went on i found really a good textures that suited each other which convinced me to go for a teacher appearance instead.  I created these layers separately so can then later utilise and manipulate them on After Effect; they will have more of a great effect. The image then was imported on After Effect, i made sure to click ‘composition retain layer’ and click off ‘eps sequence’ because this will allow me to play with each later. The composition width of 1920 and height 1080 with the frame rate ’25’ and 10 seconds.
In the beginning i was finding attaching layers to each other difficult because i did not understand what tool do i click on and which layer i should click on next. However I learned better from my mistakes and later i understood that i should click on the tool looks like a ‘swirl’ and pull the one i want to attach to. For example if i wanted the hair to be attached to the head, so it will always move with the head, i would have to drag the hair first to the head because which ever one is dragged first will be the follower.

I moved on to expanding my layers properties and added transformation such a position and rotation. We were also greatly advised to add a ‘wiggler’ effect, a wiggler allows us to use the key frames frequency every 5 second. I found this interesting and decided to also learn the coding side to this from our teacher. To code in the wiggler effect, you will need to open the layer you want to use the wiggler on, then click on any transformation clock you want while holding down ‘Alt’ then write down ‘wiggle(5,10)’ the first number in the brackets stands for the ‘Frequency’ and the last number stand for ‘Magnitude’.
I became more excited whilst making my clip when ‘Textures’ were mentioned. We need textures to make our loop motion more visually. I used simple google search for my textures and saved them on my desktop so i could import them to After Effect. I had fun playing around with my textures and layers and i used mostly ‘Alpha matte’ effect over lay on toggle switches modes because of the great visual design look it gave me. Motion Go is the way forward quoted by me because i enjoyed myself and can not wait to learn more. I can honestly say this class has motivated me to use more After Effect, especially for my projects.
